Age & Grade Requirements

  • K4 (Pre-Kindergarten): Children must be 4 years old by September 30.
  • K5 (Kindergarten): Children must be 5 years old by September 30.
  • Grade 1: Children must be 6 years old before September 30.

If your child has been evaluated for placement in a grade different from the one determined by age under the Quebec education system, please follow the Early Age Derogation process.

Next school year 2026 – 2027

  • Registration Period
    • Registration begins in January and runs through the first week of February.
  • Sibling Registrations
    • Priority is given to families with children already attending the school who wish to register a younger sibling.
  • New Student Registrations
    • Remaining spots are offered on a first come, first served basis to students living within the school’s designated territory.

    Complete an online form to express interest in sending your child(ren) to the school. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parent/Legal Guardians of current EMSB students will be able to confirm their child(ren)’s EMSB school for the upcoming school year during the official re-registration periodJanuary 12th to January 16th, 2026.

STEP 2: Link each child to your account with the following information:

  • School Board: English-Montreal School Board
  • Child’s Last Name – exactly as registered, including accents, hyphens and spaces
  • Child’s First Name – exactly as registered, including accents, hyphens and spaces

  • Child’s ID. Number or Quebec Permanent Code (QPC) You can find the QPC on child’s certificate of English eligibility or report card

Additional Services:

Grade 6 students transitioning to high school:

  • Families can confirm enrollment through the Mozaïk parent portal once their child(ren) have been accepted into an EMSB high school. If high school acceptance occurs after the official re-registration period, Mozaïk will reopen in March or April.

Daycare Registration:

  • Daycare enrollment will take place separately in April.

SCHOOL SCENARIOS

Applications accepted at the elementary school-level

During the school’s registration appointment, students will apply for both elementary school placement and their Certificate of English Eligibility for one of the following categories:

  1. A parent/sibling possesses a Certificate of English Eligibility
  2. A parent completed the majority of elementary school in English in Canada
  3. Sibling of a Child Exempted Under Article 81 (learning difficulty)
Other Applications
  • If your child(ren) falls under a different category, the application for English Eligibility must be completed at the school board level.
  • Book an appointment with EMSB’s Head Office 

Important: All Students must meet the criteria and hold their own Certificate of English Eligibility before attending any EMSB school.

    When possible, please complete the form, print it, and bring it with you to your appointment.
  2. Student Documents:
    • Child's original long-form birth certificate, showing parents' names (certified translation in English or French (if applicable)
    • Child’s Canadian document if born outside Canada (Canadian citizenship certificate or Canadian Citizenship card, or Permanent Resident card – NO PASSPORTS)
    • Child's Certificate of English Eligibility (COE) (if the student’s does not yet have a COE, the school will apply on your behalf)
    • Child's vaccination booklet
    • Child's Medicare card 
  3. Parent/Legal Guardian Documents:
    Must be the adult passing along eligibility to the child
    • Parent/Guardian’s Canadian document (Canadian birth certificate or valid Canadian passport orCanadian citizenship certificate or Canadian Citizenship card, or Permanent Resident card)
    • Parent/Guardian’s proof of English elementary education in Canada
      • If educated in Quebec: Quebec Permanent Code or Certificate of Eligibility
      • If educated in another province: Report cards or Official letter from school or school board attesting to elementary education in English (Grades 1–6), including percentage of English vs. French instruction (if applicable)
  4. Proof of residence
    • Document showing current address (utility bill, lease agreement, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child attend an EMSB elementary school if we live outside the school’s designated territory?

Yes, if space is available. If the school you want has no room, you must register at one of the two schools zoned for your home address.
Important: Families are responsible for transportation when living outside the designated territory.

 

Can my child attend an EMSB school if we live outside the EMSB territory?

Yes, with an Inter-board Agreement. You must complete this form with the school board that serves your area.
Important: Families are responsible for transportation when living outside the designated boundary.

Can my child attend a school in another board if we live inside the EMSB territory?

Yes, if accepted by that school. Families must complete an Inter-board Agreement application found on our website

Our Enrolment Policy

All schools in the EMSB must register students following the rules of our enrolment policy. New students are registered on a first come, first served basis in order of priority.

Early Entry / Derogation

In certain exceptional cases, a child may still be accepted into Kindergarten or Grade 1 if the child’s birthday falls after the acceptance limit of September 30th. Parents who would like to apply for early admission must complete a request for derogation
